Spectral Alinearities

Authored by Head Engineer Matt Davis

I spent the day in Naples doing an acoustics consultation for a really nicely equipped home studio. The space is mixing and mastering focused with a tidy synth collection, with Focal’s SM9 monitors. Despite Patrick’s efforts in treating the room with conventional acoustics (and believe me, it’s impressive and extensive work) there was still some aggressive modal activity in the subrange (and some upper spectrum alinearities from the drivers themselves) needing addressed through DSP linearization.

After two hours of analysis and filter design on my part the sound of his room has been transformed. The subrange is tight and articulate, the depth of image and localization have drastically improved, the sound of the speakers is bigger and more “real” than ever. The potential of this $8000 sound system has finally been realized.

It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on your sound system and it doesn’t matter how much Owens Corning you put on the walls, this process will make your room sound even better. Manipulating the dimensions of a room and the locations of speakers/mix position can (at best) minimize the impact of room modes. Conventional bass traps do not address problems below 60 hz, the range from 20-60hz cannot be addressed by any means apart from manipulating the dimensions of your room, PSI Audio AVAA active bass traps, or DSP linearization. DSP is by far the cheapest route to take and is a very transparent process.

"Confirmation that you are not going crazy or losing your hearing is a good thing. The following year taking advantage of these adjustments has been amazing! Thanks again Matt Davis! Starting another mix today with zero anxiety over how it will sound, because I trust what I am hearing. That’s priceless to me 🙏"
